How to Reduce your Energy Bills and Save Money in 2026
Just as we think household bills surely can’t get any higher, we go through another unprecedented event which causes prices to sky rocket.
There are some areas of life where we can more easily cut down our expenses, but our essential spending, including our mortgage or rent payments and our energy bills, are a little trickier.
I’ve got some top tips for you to cut down on your energy bills, so you can pay as little as possible, leaving more money to put towards things that are important to you; your savings goals, a holiday or a fun night out with friends.

Comparing Energy Providers to get the Best Deal
I’ve been guilty of staying loyal to a company for too long and paying over the odds; now I’ve learned that it’s better to switch and switch again to make sure I’m getting the best rates!
It’s best to compare providers regularly, but as this can be quite a bit of admin, you could use a service like Nous.
Nous are a free service which find the cheapest deals for your energy, broadband, mobile and mortgage bills, and they handle the hassle of changing providers, too.
By signing up to a service like Nous, you’ll save both time and money, and be confident that you are always on the cheapest rate!
Focus on heating the person
A heated blanket was an absolute saviour for me last autumn; when the weather started to turn, instead of putting the heating on, I could ward away a chill by cosying up with my heated blanket for an hour or two whilst I worked from home, or when watching my favourite shows in the evening.
Heated blankets cost between 2-7p per hour to heat on average, which is way more cost effective than heating a whole house, especially when the temperatures are yet to drop fully.
Another top tip is to keep your blankets in a basket close to your sofa or by your desk if you work from home, so they are easy to grab instead of reaching for the thermostat! I cannot live without my huge Oodie during the cooler months too; layers are key.
Avoid boiling too much water
Save energy by measuring out the water in your mug(s) before pouring into the kettle rather than guessing, and boiling too much water. If you know you’re likely to want multiple hot drinks throughout the day, use a flask to boil your water once and keep it warm throughout the day.
Block those drafts
Invest in drafts blockers to keep your rooms warmer, or make your own. For a simple solution, fill a long sock with rice and tie off the end for an easy DIY version.
It’s worth checking your windows for drafts too; Our windows are quite old, so we bought a reel of seal tape which we have used to fill the gaps whilst we save for new, better insulated windows.
Radiator heat reflectors can reduce heat loss and keep your home warmer during the winter months (or you can DIY your own using tin foil!)
Save energy when cooking
Turn off your hob a few minutes earlier when cooking and let the residual heat continue to cook your food.
If you cook using your oven regularly, an airfryer might be a cheaper option; airfryers use between 15p-30p of electricity per 30 minutes use, and due to speedier cooking times, can save households up to £200+ per year in electricity costs.
